The property was purchased in late 2005 and construction began in 2007. Sandra financed the initial construction of The Crane Centre. The Creative Life Wing (Renamed the Education Wing) was completed in 2009. The 8" slab roof for the large ground floor was completed in 2016. Additional classrooms have been completed in the lower level.
The Crane Centre Inc. became a Michigan corporation and the IRS 501c3 status was completed.
Funds have been raised each year to facilitate hiring a full time property manager, and guard/groundskeeper to maintain the campus plus the part time teachers.
In 2010 instruction began with our first class of students in the Food Service section of the Hospitality Industry. It has been so exciting to see these young people grow. They had so little future before this training and now are holding jobs and some are continuing their education. The staff is extraordinary and creative as they provide our students with a wonderful education opportunity. Our school is unique in that we provide "practicals" for the students. "Practicals" are the hands on training in the various aspects of food service; most other schools limit the training to text book learning. Our students are known in the Mbarara hotel/restaurant venues as being very well trained young people.
The goal of our U.S. board is to raise the funds to complete our ground floor, a guard house and entrance gate along with the landscaping. When this is completed, and our curriculum is fully developed we plan on turning ownership of The Crane Centre over to our competent Ugandan Board and support team.
The rental and food services we will be able to provide on our campus to groups wanting a beautiful venue and an opportunity in helping train Ugandan young people to have a better quality of life will result in an income that will completely maintain the campus and most of the school costs. It is expected that the Ugandan Board will also be able to set funds aside to complete the 2nd and 3rd floors sleeping rooms to provide hotel services.
